Sydney four-piece Sparkadia are extremely busy at the moment, finishing up a tour in the UK supporting The Thrills and getting ready to release their debut album, ‘Postcards’, which has a world wide release date of March 29. In the meantime however, the band has released a single from the forthcoming album, Animals, which is currently available through digital channels.

At first, the track did not grab me and seemed to be a little bit bland. After a second and third listen however, some of the bands 1980s influences (including particularly Elvis Costello), started to shine through and mix with the modern rock sounds that are more prominent, which succeeds in giving the song some deeper qualities.

Lyrically, the track is relatively strong, and lead singer AB’s voice proves strangely hypnotic, pulling you along on a mellow indie-pop ride for just under three minutes. You will find yourself humming this tune to yourself for much longer than that however, as famed producer Ben Hillier’s experience shines through to ensure that the band produces a polished and fairly impressive first single.

Sparkadia, who will be touring Australia in March, signed to UK indie label Ark Recordings on the back of their demos, and have had the opportunity to tour with the likes of Tegan and Sarah, Ben Lee, The Pet Shop Boys and Mika. They recorded their debut album under the guidance of producer Ben Hillier (whose impressive resume includes Blur), and if the first single is to be any judgement, it will be quite an impressive debut effort, one that will earn Sparkadia their place on the indie-pop playlist.
